87-year-old Bill Pinkney, the pioneering Black sailor, passes away after becoming the first-ever to circumnavigate the globe via Cape Horn

Bill Pinkney, the second African American man to sail solo around the world and the first via Cape Horn, has passed away at the age of 87. Pinkney fell down a staircase and suffered a brain injury, leading to his death in Atlanta. He completed his global expedition in 1992, sailing 27,000 miles over 22 months. Pinkney sailed past Robben Island, where Nelson Mandela was imprisoned, and was known for his passion for sailing and his exploration of slave trade routes. He received numerous honors and awards throughout his career and was inducted into the National Sailing Hall of Fame in 2021.
