The lack of weather data and forecasting in Africa is leaving the continent underprepared for the impacts of climate change. With only 37 radar facilities to track weather compared to Europe’s 345 and North America’s 291, Africa is in a “climate risk blind spot,” according to researcher Asaf Tzachor. The inability to accurately predict and forecast weather patterns affects crucial decisions such as when to plant crops, leading to devastating losses, especially for rain-fed agriculture. Investment in Africa’s adaptation to climate change and improved data collection and forecasting is urgently needed to mitigate the impacts of climate change on the continent.
