Christopher Bailey, a Black man, will receive a settlement of $4.75 million after being severely beaten by Los Angeles County sheriffs during a traffic stop in 2020. Bailey suffered irreversible eye damage, missing teeth, and facial fractures as a result of the incident. This settlement is the latest in a series of substantial payments made by the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors for legal disputes involving the Sheriff’s Department. Bailey’s attorney welcomed the settlement as a measure of justice but called for the termination and criminal prosecution of the deputies involved. Bailey was charged with resisting arrest and marijuana-related offenses, but some charges were later dismissed.
