Connecting Parents to Online Bookshops That Feature Empowering Books for Children of Color

The representation of Black characters in the books children read is crucial for their self-esteem, and research indicates that seeing characters that look like them improves their confidence. However, the publishing industry is still lacking in diversity. The Cooperative Children’s Book Center found that out of the 3,400 children’s books published in 2020, only 327 were about Black characters. This significant disparity highlights the need for more diverse representation in children’s literature. While progress is being made, there is still a long way to go to ensure that Black children see themselves reflected in the books they read.
