Criminal prosecutions in St. Louis have more than doubled since the resignation of the city’s first Black circuit attorney, according to an analysis by the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. Over the three-month period following Gabe Gore’s appointment as circuit attorney, more than 1,400 cases were filed compared to 620 cases during Kim Gardner’s tenure. Gardner, a progressive prosecutor, faced an ouster effort by Missouri’s attorney general and Republican state lawmakers before announcing her resignation. Gore, who took over the position, has been working to tackle a backlog of pending charge applications and aims to clear the backlog by early 2024.
