The trial for two police officers involved in the fatal encounter with Elijah McClain has begun in Denver. McClain, a young Black man, was stopped by police last summer after a 911 caller reported him looking “sketchy.” He was unarmed and had committed no crime. The officers placed him in a neck hold and paramedics administered a sedative, which later contributed to his death. The trial will determine if the officers are guilty of manslaughter and other charges. The case gained attention and sparked outrage over racial injustice in policing and the use of force by law enforcement.
