Five former Memphis police officers have been charged with federal civil rights violations in the beating death of Tyre Nichols. The officers were indicted in U.S. District Court in Memphis on charges including excessive force, failure to intervene, witness tampering, and obstruction of justice. Nichols died three days after the violent beating during a traffic stop in January. The officers, who are also fighting second-degree murder charges in state courts, have pleaded not guilty to all charges. The indictment alleges that the officers used excessive force, failed to report Nichols’ injuries, and conspired to cover up their misconduct.
