Gabe Amo, the Democratic nominee for Rhode Island’s 1st Congressional District, could become the first Black American and person of color to represent the district. Amo, a former White House staffer, won the Democratic nomination in a primary election last week and will face Republican challenger Gerry Leonard in the general election. Amo’s focus is on being an effective congressperson and addressing issues such as social security, Medicare, the climate crisis, gun violence, and reproductive freedom. If elected, he would make history but believes the job he’s asking the people of Rhode Island to hire him for is more important.
