Google will soon require that political ads using artificial intelligence (AI) be accompanied by a prominent disclosure if imagery or sounds have been synthetically altered. The new rule, which starts in mid-November, will apply to AI-generated election ads on YouTube and other Google platforms. The rule will also affect campaign ads in regions such as India, South Africa, and the European Union. Generative AI tools are making it easier to create fake images, videos, and audio clips in political advertising. Google’s action could put pressure on other platforms to follow suit.
