The government of Liberia has confirmed that it has deported former Sierra Leone Chief Superintendent of Police, Mohammed Y. Toure, who is accused of taking part in a failed coup attempt against Sierra Leone’s President Julius Maada Bio. Toure was deported back to Sierra Leone on August 8, 2023. The deportation came following allegations by Sierra Leonean police of violent protests planned by unnamed individuals at home and abroad to overthrow the democratically elected government. Liberia’s Independent Commission on Human Rights has cautioned against the extradition, citing concerns about physical abuse, unfair trial, or excessive punishment.
