According to education expert Elizabeth Albro, many middle and high school teachers are not equipped to teach older students who struggle with reading. The COVID-19 pandemic has disrupted the education of younger students who were still learning foundational skills when schools shut down. While schools have implemented various strategies to help students catch up, many will still require extra reading support. Last year’s third-graders, in particular, experienced significant setbacks in reading. Despite efforts to provide additional instruction, students are still behind pre-pandemic reading levels. Some schools are now focusing on the “science of reading” and phonics-based approaches to help struggling readers in upper grades.
