California Governor Gavin Newsom faced criticism after stating in an interview that if he had to fill the Senate seat left by ailing Senator Dianne Feinstein, he would choose a Black woman, but not one currently running for the seat. Representative Barbara Lee, one of the Democratic candidates for the seat, called Newsom’s remarks insulting, stating that appointing a Black woman as a caretaker to check a box was disrespectful to Black women. Newsom later clarified that he did not want to name a replacement, but acknowledged that he would fill the seat if necessary.
