“American Fiction,” directed by Cord Jefferson and starring Jeffery Wright, has won the People’s Choice Award at the Toronto International Film Festival, a significant indicator of success in the Oscar race. The film is an adaptation of Percival Everett’s novel “Erasure” and follows a disillusioned academic who resents the literary industry’s focus on “Black books” that cater to white stereotypes. The People’s Choice winner at TIFF has historically gone on to receive a best-picture nomination at the Academy Awards. “American Fiction” will be released in theaters on November 3 and features Sterling K. Brown, Issa Rae, and Tracee Ellis Ross.
