Former Major League Baseball star Brandon Phillips and current women’s professional wrestler Jade Cargill have made a statement about Black team ownership by winning the Women’s Professional Fastpitch softball championship with their team, the Texas Smoke. Despite not owning a team in the NFL, NBA, or MLB, the couple takes pride in showing that Black entrepreneurs can successfully call the shots in professional sports. Majority ownership in major North American pro sports by anyone other than white men is rare, and Phillips and Cargill hope their success will inspire other Black owners. The couple aims to make Black ownership in sports more common and accessible.
