Boynton Chapel Methodist Church, designed by Texas’ first licensed Black architect John S. Chase in 1957, has been designated as a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark. The church, located in Houston’s Third Ward, has a long history of serving the Black community. The designation opens the door to tax credits, grants, and other support. Chase’s son expressed his father’s pride in the church and its early embrace of his work. The church is seeking funds for repairs, including the replacement of the air conditioning system and restoration of the bell tower and sanctuary windows. The church currently has 225 members.
