The US Justice Department has petitioned the Supreme Court to hear arguments on the use of the abortion drug mifepristone. The move comes after the 5th US Circuit Court of Appeals restricted access to the drug, including prohibiting pregnant women from receiving it by mail. Advocates have warned that the restrictions could disproportionately harm pregnant women and people of color. The Justice Department argues that mifepristone should remain widely available without restrictions, as it is the safest and most effective method for terminating early pregnancies. If the Supreme Court takes on the case, a decision is not expected until next year.
