On September 15, 1963, a bomb exploded at the 16th Street Baptist Church in Birmingham, Alabama, killing four young girls. The Rev. Carolyn McKinstry, who was present at the church that day, recently shared her story with Black News & Views. McKinstry was a teenager at the time and answered a phone call just minutes before the explosion. She heard a male voice say “Three minutes,” leaving her confused. Shortly after, the bomb destroyed the side of the church, resulting in the tragic loss of young lives. McKinstry’s firsthand account sheds light on this devastating event in history.
