The new Netflix documentary, “Stamped from the Beginning,” based on the book by Ibram X. Kendi, challenges the dominant narrative of Black American history and centers the voices and stories of Black women scholars and activists. The film explores the growth of Blackness and anti-Blackness in the United States, from the experiences of figures like Phillis Wheatley, Harriet Jacobs, and Ida B. Wells to the present day. It depicts the brutalization of Black people without hyper-focusing on graphic images of violence, and also criticizes Black leaders and Democrats for perpetuating anti-Blackness. The documentary is set to premiere on Netflix on November 15.
