Jury selection has begun for the trial of three police officers from Tacoma, Washington who are charged in the death of Manuel “Manny” Ellis, a 33-year-old black man. Ellis was tackled, punched, shocked with a stun gun, and held face down on a sidewalk by the officers in March 2020, two months before the death of George Floyd. Officers Christopher Burbank and Matthew Collins, who are white, have been charged with second-degree murder, while Timothy Rankine, who is Asian American, faces first-degree manslaughter charges. The trial is expected to run until December, with opening statements starting on October 2.
