The United Nations Human Rights Council is meeting in Geneva from September 11 to October 13, 2023. The U.N. human rights chief, Volker Türk, called for a swift return to civilian rule in African countries that have experienced military coups in recent years. He highlighted the impact of climate change and lack of investment in education and healthcare in the Sahel region, which has fueled extremism. Türk also addressed other global crises, including gang violence in Haiti, migrant deaths in the Mediterranean, and poverty. He called for accountability for environmental damage and highlighted concerns in Russia, China, and Iran.
