County commissioners in Georgia are considering doubling the maximum size of houses that can be built in the Hogg Hummock community on Sapelo Island. The proposed zoning changes would favor wealthy buyers and could lead to tax increases that would pressure indigenous residents to sell their land, according to Commissioner Roger Lotson. The Hogg Hummock community is one of the few surviving Gullah-Geechee communities in the South, descendants of enslaved people who have lived along the Southeast coast for generations. Critics argue that the proposed changes would contribute to the destruction of the community’s culture and heritage.
